To help you recover quickly and avoid complications following your dental implant procedure in Sylmar, California, our dentists and team recommend that you follow these postoperative instructions closely. Proper care during the healing period is essential for the success of your implant. You can expect some tenderness, swelling and minor bleeding in the initial days, but careful attention to these guidelines will help ensure a smooth and healthy recovery.
Managing Bleeding, Swelling & Discomfort
- Minor bleeding is normal during the first 24 hours after your implant placement. If bleeding continues, gently bite on a gauze pad placed over the surgical site for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Avoid excessive spitting or rinsing, as this can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.
- To minimize swelling, apply an ice pack or cold compress to the side of your face for 15-minute intervals during the first 48 hours. After that, switch to warm compresses to help reduce any remaining swelling.
- Discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- If you have been prescribed medications or antibiotics, take them exactly as directed. Be sure to complete the full course of antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
Oral Hygiene & Activity Restrictions
- You should not rinse your mouth for the rest of the day after surgery. Beginning the next day, rinse gently with warm saltwater every two to three hours for several days. Use one-half teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water.
- After a few days, reduce rinsing to after meals and before bedtime for up to two weeks.
- Brush your teeth the day after surgery, but avoid the surgical site until it has sufficiently healed. Maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout your recovery.
- Rest is vital to recovery. Refrain from vigorous physical activity for at least 48 hours. Keep your head elevated when lying down and avoid bending or heavy lifting.
- You should not operate machinery or drive for at least 12 hours following your procedure, or longer if you are taking prescription pain medications.
Foods, Appliances & Smoking
- Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days.
- Avoid hot, crunchy or spicy foods that could irritate the surgical site.
- Drink plenty of fluids, but do not use straws, as suction may disturb the healing area.
- If you wear a partial denture, full denture or oral appliance, do not use it until our dentists clears you to do so.
- Avoid chewing on the implant site, especially if a temporary crown was placed.
- Smoking or using tobacco products significantly increases the risk of implant failure. Avoid all tobacco products during the healing process.
