Post-op care is essential to ensure a smooth recovery following wisdom teeth removal in Sylmar, California. By following your post-op instructions, you can help reduce the risk of infection, minimize discomfort and promote faster healing. Every individual heals differently, but careful attention to aftercare guidelines makes a significant difference in your recovery experience.

Immediate Care After Surgery

  • After your procedure, keep the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for at least 30 to 45 minutes. Change it as needed if bleeding continues.
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting or touching the surgical areas, as this may dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.
  • Rest for the remainder of the day, keeping your head elevated with extra pillows while lying down.

Pain, Swelling & Bleeding Management

  • Mild bleeding is normal during the first 24 to 48 hours. Slightly red-tinged saliva is to be expected. If you experience more active bleeding, bite down on fresh gauze for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, moisten a black tea bag and place it over the area with gentle pressure.
  • Apply an ice pack on your cheek in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 hours to help reduce swelling. After the first day, switch to warm, moist compresses to encourage circulation and ease jaw stiffness.
  • Pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen unless stronger medication has been prescribed. Begin your pain management regimen before the numbing wears off.

Diet & Oral Hygiene Guidelines

  • Eat soft, cool foods such as yogurt, applesauce, smoothies or mashed potatoes during the initial days after surgery.
  • Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, but do not use a straw for at least five to seven days. Suction from straw use can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful condition known as dry socket.
  • Do not brush your teeth or rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours.
  • Starting the day after surgery, gently rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) after meals.
  • Avoid commercial mouthwashes unless directed otherwise. Resume brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush, but be very gentle around the surgical areas.

Additional Instructions & Cautions

  • Avoid smoking, vaping or using tobacco products for at least five days following surgery. These habits significantly increase the risk of dry socket and infection.
  • Refrain from strenuous activities for at least three to four days. Any exercise or heavy lifting may increase bleeding and swelling.
  • If you received IV sedation or general anesthesia, do not drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 24 hours.
  • Additionally, avoid driving while taking prescription pain medication that may impair your coordination or alertness.
